Pam de Ocampo dancing alegrías at the Charles E. Beatley Jr Central Library of Alexandria. May 21, 2011 (screen capture from HD video by Stan Peters)

It's 3-something on Saturday as I type these words. Got home a short while ago from the informal flamenco guitar recital by my friend Torcuato Zamora at the Burke Branch Alexandria Library. A week ago, I performed at the Alexandria Central Library with dancers Ginette and Pam de Ocampo. And a couple of weeks before that, dancer Marsha Bonet-Savchenko gave a lecture/demo on flamenco dance at the Burke Branch. I guess you're wondering what's the reason for the Spanish theme of events at in Alexandria library system?

The program is called All Alexandria Reads. Here's a quote from the brochure:

"Facilitated by Alexandria Library, this program is a community-based reading cooperative designed to create shared experiences through reading. All are invited to read the featured title and similar books for younger readers. In May, join the events that relate to the themes of The Shadow of the Wind."

"'The time is the 1950s; the place, Barcelona. Daniel, the son of a bookstore owner, is ten when he discovers a novel, The Shadow of the Wind, by Julián Carax. The book is rare, the author obscure, and rumors tell of a man who has been burning every copy he can find of Carax's novels. The man calls himself Laín Coubert, the name of the devil in one of Carax's novels. As Daniel grows up, his fascination with the mysterious Carax links him to a blind femme fatale, Clara; another Carax fan, a leftist jack-of-all-trades, Fermín; his best friend's sister, the delightful Beatriz; and, as he begins investigating the life and death of Carax, a cast of characters with secrets to hide. Officially, Carax's body was dumped in an alley in 1936. But discrepancies in this story surface...'"

These first few pics you're seeing are from the show on May 21st. This was my first time to visit the Alexandria Central Library. Ginette, Pam and I had the pleasure of performing in the beautiful reading garden. Yes, it was 80°F and humid and being the professionals that we are, we did a pretty good job I'd say of looking comfortable. :-) But it's all good. We had a small but appreciative audience of children and their parents. Some of whom I think we inspired to take up flamenco when they get older. See photos below.

(Many thanks to the library for providing the sheet of plywood for our stage floor. The dancers loved it!)

These last two pics were taken today Saturday May 28th. I had the afternoon free so I decided to support my fellow flamenco guitarist Torcuato Zamora at the Burke Branch Alexandria Library. He gave an hour-long program of flamenco that included soleá, campanilleros, Zorongo Gitano, Autumn Leaves por rumba, Malagueña by Ernesto Leucoña, taranto and alegrías.

DC Feria de Sevilla 2010-Part Five

Furia Flamenca dancer Sylvia Melecio

It's 10:30am on Friday as I type these words. Woke up late, but got a good night's sleep for a change! Decided to quickly publish this blog before heading out to start my day.

Just one last reminder that the 2011 DC Feria de Sevilla will take place at Strathmore this Sunday May 15th and starts at 12:30pm. FREE admission! There's a parking garage next to the park. It's also next to the Grosvenor/Strathmore metro on the red line.

12:30pm Opening Ceremony - Salve Rociera
1:00pm Requiebros - Carmen de Vicente
2:00pm Flamenco Aparicio - Aparicio Dance Company
3:00pm Arte Flamenco - Natalia Monteleón
4:00pm Ana Martinez & Paco de Málaga
5:00pm Furia Flamenca - Estela y Torcuato

The shows are about 20 minutes long, but have been known to stretch longer. ;-)

TIPS for the DC Feria de Sevilla:

  1. Get there early. The first group goes on at about 1:00pm. Every group works hard to put on a good show and deserves to have a good size audience—the children and other student performers need your moral support. There are groups performing every hour or so.
  2. Another reason to get there early is to preview the food kiosks. Decide which ones you want to visit so that later in the day when the lines get long—and they will—you'll know what you're waiting for. Don't forget, you have to stand in line to buy food tickets and then stand in another line to use those tickets to get food.
  3. If you're into photography or videos, take your camera or camcorder. There are lots of colorful costumes and personalities that you'll want to capture on film.
  4. Make the rounds. There is lots to see. Don't just "plant" yourself at your favorite caseta. Each one has something special to offer.
  5. Finally this last tip applies especially to the performers. During the rest of the year, many of us are in competition with each other. It can be a good thing—it challenges us to be our best. But on this special day, don't lose sight of what the Feria is all about: it's NOT to celebrate ourselves but rather to celebrate the beauty and richness of Spanish culture.

These tips were first published on my website ten years ago! Today's collection of pics is courtesy of pro photographer Juan Carlos Fuentes. Thank you Juan. Enjoy!
