About EL PINTOR

EL PINTOR (The painter) based on the philosophical views of famous painter Julio Romero de Torres from Córdoba, Spain, who dedicated his life to reflect the traditions of southern Spain, expressing in his painting the state of the times at the end of the first Spanish republic. The painter focuses his art on the Spanish women from different social classes and the way they were allowed to express themselves. He uses many landscapes of his native Córdoba and the culture of his time. Most of his art is closely related to the magical spectrum of flamenco, the Spanish traditional dance form and most important part of Spanish culture. His art pays homage to the greatest artists of the time: singers, dancers and musicians as a symbol of eternal love of flamenco and Andalucía region, a land of nostalgia, fire and joy. Julio Romero de Torres, the extraordinary artist whose art is as "deep" as the deep song he loved, Cante Hondo (Deep Song).

The production of EL PINTOR will be produced and choreographed by Antonio Hidalgo Paz, an award-winning dancer and choreographer from Córdoba, Spain. Maestro Hidalgo has performed and collaborated with numerous companies, including Antonio Gades' company and has toured Spain, Europe, Japan, USA, and South America.

The original music of EL PINTOR was composed in 2004 by international composer and guitarist Calvin Hazen from Spain with the collaboration of producer/choreographer, Antonio Hidalgo Paz and an expert team of international musicians and singers such as Terence Butler (flutist), Jose Salinas (Singer), Angelica Leiva "La Treme," singer, Fermín Querol, (guitarist), and Nacho Arimani, percussionist. This is the first time the original music of EL PINTOR will be choreographed and performed in the United States.

EL PINTOR includes the representation of "Poema de Córdoba" (Poem of Córdoba), a composition of seven paintings of women from different cultures that have touched Cordoba and Spanish history through the years. The palos flamencos that will be represented in El Pintor are Alegrías, Malagueña, Saeta, Soleá, Fandangos, Martinete, Bulerías and Tangos.

Antonio Hidalgo (Guest Artist – producer and choreographer) began his professional career at the Flamenco festivals in Cordoba, Spain. In 1984, he became a member of the Spanish Ballet of Carmen Mota, touring Italy, France, Monte Carlo, South America and the United States. The company performed frequently throughout Spain. In 1990, Mr. Hidalgo became an independent soloist, performing with various dance companies in the Costa del Sol and in Flamenco tablaos. He has directed and choreographed several Flamenco productions including, among many others, "Fiesta de Andalucia" in Spain and "Palais des Beaux Arts" in Brussels. He has performed with the ballet of Antonio Gades, the ballet of José Greco, the "Tablao El Flamenco" in Japan, and Maria Benitez' "Estampa Flamenca." He has made frequent appearances on international television and has performed with his own dance company in Japan and in many venues in Spain. Mr. Hidalgo has worked with "Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana" since 1998. His choreographies and performances premiered to great acclaim in "Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana" at The Joyce Theater in New York City in 2001 and 2002. Most recently, Mr. Hidalgo is producing work for La Compañía de Jorge Navarro and has co-produced and performed in "Los Hombres" in New York and "El Cristo de Los Flamenco" in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 2007 he received the Premio Andaluz de Turismo in Spain for his artistic achievement.

"Antonio Hidalgo increases the speed dazzlingly without sacrificing his intense composure, then pulls everything down to a sotto voce flutter of taconeo, his heels and toes hardly seeming to move." -- The Village Voice

"Antonio Hidalgo's 'Bailaor/Bailaora,' an ingenious production that offered a sample of male and female flamenco dance forms. Flamenco may emphasize stamping, but Mr. Hidalgo choreographically demonstrated that stamping can be infinitely varied." -- The New York Times

"Antonio Hidalgo performs master moves with whiplash fury." -- Dallas Morning News

Soul Encounters: Flamenco Meets Jazz A New Dance-Music-Theatre Production by Furia Flamenca Comes to The Alden

Furia FlamencaThe shared heritage of jazz music and flamenco dance will be explored at a special, one-night performance of Furia Flamenca's new work Soul Encounters: Flamenco Meets Jazz. The show will be held at The Alden in McLean at 8pm. on Saturday, May 11. Tickets are $25/$18 for MCC tax district residents. The theatre is located at 1234 Ingleside Avenue.

Soul Encounters explores the common souls of pure flamenco and pure jazz music and intersects them in New World style. Both arising from the pain of oppression and joy of life, both passionate and emotional art forms, the production explores flamenco's and jazz's origins with gypsies in Spain and slaves in America, celebrating their differences, then fusing old and new worlds as one. Soul Encounters, which premiered at a local venue earlier this year, has been expanded into a full, evening-length work and features live performances by jazz and flamenco ensembles.>

DC's own Furia Flamenca expresses the ferocity and passion of flamenco in a unique style that combines the dance form's gypsy heritage with modern flamenco choreography, creating an elegant balance of motion and energy that makes the group's performances enthralling and entertaining. Founded by director Estela Velez in 2003, the company has taken the best elements of its dancers' backgrounds (flamenco, ballet, Middle Eastern, modern and tap, to name a few) and melded them into a sumptuous feast for the eyes, ears and heart. The company is a Resident Arts Partner with the Joy of Motion Dance Center.

Tickets are on sale now! Tickets can be purchased in person at the Alden Theatre Box Office, or online at www.aldentheatre.org. For more information, call 703-790-0123, TTY: 711.

Flamenco/Flamenca: Flamenco Aparicio Dance Company presented by Michelle Jewell at Schwartz Center for the Arts in Dover, Delaware

Edwin Aparicio's Flamenco Flamenca at Schwartz Center for the Arts in Dover, Delaware. Photo by Steve Johnson

The director and founder of Flamenco Aparicio Dance Company and curator of GALA Hispanic Theatre's celebrated annual Fuego Flamenco Festival brings his latest work: Flamenco/Flamenca to The Schwartz Center in Dover. Edwin Aparicio (Choreographer, Director, Dancer) was featured in Dance Magazine's annual "25 Artists to Watch" list in 2009 and has been described by critics as "the most amazing dancer seen in years" with his "hellfire footwork." An internationally acclaimed dancer, he has shared the stage with renowned artists such as Carmela Greco, Chuscales, and Silverio Heredia among others. Mr. Aparicio is a faculty member of the Washington School of Ballet, conducts flamenco classes throughout the country, and was nominated for the 2010 Metro DC Dance Award for Outstanding Individual Performance. In his latest work, Aparicio continues to explore gender themes in Flamenco. "While steeped in tradition," remarks Aparicio, "flamenco continues to evolve. What is and is not feminine or masculine in flamenco is not always a question of inflexible cultural norms. Rather, it is a complex system of organic changes - a system of subtleties and serendipitous outcomes." Aparicio and his ensemble of dancers, guitarists and cantaores bring to the stage the fire and grace that has made this art one of the most mystifying and ancient celebrations of emotion and music in modern history."
