Rehearsal at Kayoko's studio December 28, 2003

The studio is located in Falls Church. This time we run through the show from beginning to end in preparation for our New Year's Eve in First Night Alexandria. We'll be performing at Regent University in Old Town Alexandria (across the street from King St Metro). Approximate showtimes: 7:15pm, 8:45pm and 10:15pm.

Rehearsal at Pink Flamenco studio December 28, 2003

With most of the local studios closed for the holidays, dancer Carlton Ashton was fortunate to find the Pink Flamenco studio (near Bambule) conveniently open--so he called me up at the last minute, and I joined him for a little jam session.

December 28, 2003 6:50pm

December 28, 2003 6:48pm Carlton doesn't perform onstage regularly, but frequently you can find him hanging out at Cafe Citron on Monday nights where we always ask him to get up on stage for some Sevillanas or bulerías.

December 28, 2003 9:18pm I even managed to squeeze in a little time to wish singer Indira Terrazas a happy birthday at her party at El Puerto restaurant in Arlington--if you like Peruvian cuisine, I highly recommend the Papa a la Huancaina. (El Puerto 703-271-8100 is where rumba group Duende Camaron performs on Sunday nights around midnight.)

Indira often performs at Las Tapas on Wednesdays with guitarists Amilcar Cruz, Michael Bard and singer Carolina Marin.

Rehearsal at Pink Flamenco studio December 26, 2003

While the rest of the world was out doing after-Christmas shopping, dancer Ginette and yours truly were busy rehearsing for our upcoming New Year's Eve show in First Night Alexandria.

No, Ginette doesn't normally practice in street clothes. We just posed for photos after the rehearsal just before leaving the studio. December 26, 2003 6:54pm (photo by Gina)

Marija Temo weekly workshop December 21, 2003

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending Marija Temo's weekly guitar workshop. I'm working on an article to give my readers an insider's view of what goes on in this unique and very practical hands-on guitar and flamenco accompaniment workshop. (I need this class myself!) Article is coming in a week or two--stay tuned!

A view of dancer Gigi Ortega's studio where the workshop takes place. Thanks Gigi! The first hour of the workshop is usually devoted to classical guitar, hence the music stands. December 21, 2003 1:05pm

Marija sings a tientos letra as the students listen for her "tones" that signal a harmonic change in the accompaniment. December 21, 2003 1:14pm

For more information, visit Marija Temo's website and click on "Teaching Information." (Thanks to guitarist Marty Dow for giving me a ride to the workshop.)

In December 2000, I interviewed Marija for the DC Flamenco website. Details

Cafe Citron December 15, 2003

Singer Gerard Moreno normally performs every Monday at Cafe Citron, but had to take the night off to attend to urgent matters. So I called up dancer Shahram Tehranian to take his place. It had been a few months since I last performed with Shahram, but this evening, we made an extra effort to concentrate and surprised ourselves when it resulted in a great performance! Thanks Shahram! Of course it helped considerably that the audience was very enthusiastic and responsive.

Andalucia December 11, 2003

Every Thursday night, the Andalucia Restaurant features a flamenco show with dancers Gigi Ortega, Guadalupe Cerritos and yours truly on guitar.

Normally, Annapolis-based guitarist Lee Aube gets his weekly fill of flamenco on Tuesdays when he plays for Gigi Ortega's flamenco dance classes in Silver Spring.

Something unexpected came up and he couldn't make it last Tuesday, so to make up for it, I invited him to join yours truly on stage at the Andalucia Restaurant.

Las Tapas December 10, 2003

On Wednesday nights, Las Tapas features a group that performs rumba instrumentals and a variety of popular songs from Latin America, including Brazil.

Circe/Las Tapas December 9, 2003

It's not too often that I get booked to perform at a private party just around the corner from one of my weekly gigs. Guitarist/singer Gerard Moreno put a group together including yours truly and dancer Sara Jerez for a private party at Circe Aveda Day Spa in Old Town Alexandria.

We performed Sevillanas, soleá and bulerías, mingled awhile, and packed up early enough to walk around the corner to Las Tapas and say hello to our friends.

Cafe Citron December 8, 2003

It's always a lot of fun when my flamenco friends come and join us onstage for Sevillanas or bulerías. This evening in the audience was a dancer from San Francisco named Mario who got up and danced a little aire-filled tangos. Unfortunately, I didn't get a picture, but I told him about my website so hopefully he'll show up at some of the other local tablaos in the near future.

Kayoko's Christmas Concert December 6, 2003

Every December, dancer Kayoko Iwamoto puts on a Christmas concert featuring her students, herself and a guest artist or two. This year's concert took place in her home in Falls Church, where she transformed her basement into a cozy little tablao.

(Please forgive the blurriness of the photos. As a courtesy to the performers, flash photography was not used.)

Andalucia Restaurant December 4, 2003

Guitarist Behzad Habibzai subbed for me at the Andalucia Restaurant last Thursday. Congrats to him on his tablao debut (technically, his debut was in November, but I wasn't able to get pictures).

Did you know that guitarist Richard Marlow, who regularly performs with dancers at Las Tapas and Toro Tapas, also made his tablao debut at the Andalucia in 1998?
