Haven't you ever wondered about things like "When was Paco de Lucía last
in DC?" Um...well I just realized how useful it would be to have an archive
past events archive to help answers questions like that one. But since I didn't
realize this great idea until now, the archives only go back as far as June
2003. Oh well! Years from now, you'll better appreciate this archive.
Here you will find single-performance events by visiting and local artists.

It's been 10 great years that Lisner hosted the flamenco festival and there's a good chance it will come back in the near future. New York and Boston don't have flamenco festivals this year either, so we're not the only ones. But for now we do have a few exciting things coming up for February and March.

Furia Flamenca's Lorca: Flamenco Poetry at the Atlas Performing Arts Center
Local flamenco dance company Furia Flamenca under the direction of Estela Velez brings to life some of the works of Federico García Lorca, poet, playwright, artist, and composer in an evening of dance, poetry, and song. Federico García Lorca was killed in the Spanish Civil war by Fascists in 1936 at the age of 38. Amongst the works portrayed are some of his most famous collections of poems including the Romancero Gitano (Gypsy Ballads) which includes Prendimiento de Antonito El Camborio en el Camino de Sevilla and Muerte de Antonito perhaps a foreboding of Lorca's own death. His words are filled with passion for life, love, and death as in the lament to the bullfighter, Llanto por Ignacio Sánchez Mejias. His Gypsy spirit is also present in his songs from the joyful sounds of Sevillanas del Siglo XVIII to the haunting and melancholy Zorongo. Guitarists Guillermo Christie and Torcuato Zamora, percusionist Antonio Castro-Ossorio, violinist Andrea Vercoe, and singers Jorge Porta and Margarita Ossorio join Furia Flamenca to bring you the passion of Federico García Lorca.

It is a generic name for a range of cantes (styles of songs) involving happy and lively music, such as caracoles, mirabrás, romeras and alegrías, all of which have generally brief coplas (poetic compositions, in verse, used as lyrics), and are thought to be related with the old Cádiazo jota. They are cantes festeros (feast or party songs, which tend to be loud and happy) for dancing that became very fashionable in the cafés cantantes (late nineteenth and early twentieth century establishments serving drinks that staged performances of singing, playing and dancing). This dance is characterised by a harmonious swinging of the arms, undulating movements, light punteados (a kind of percussion using the feet), paso castellano de perfil (a dance step that is characteristic of cantiñas and alegrías, and is done with side-on to the audience) and escobillas (section of the dance that includes the zapateado, a rhythmic combination of sounds made by stepping with the heel, sole and toe of the foot). The meter of the cantiñas is related to the meter of the soleá, and both of them are also related to bulerías, or the 12 beat. The choreography taught will use music from one of the biggest performers/singer of cantiñas El Pinini de Utrera.
Miguel Vargas "Even though absorbed in his dancing, he keeps himself completely under control, firm and light at the same time. Vargas dominates the audience just by slightly arching his pinkie with the most varied rhythms, he shows a flamenco without compromises, that puts together archaic and ageless traditions, with intense and improvised interpretation." -Rheinische Post
This is only one of many fabulous acclaims Miguel Vargas earned for his performances in Germany, France, Japan and Spain, just to mention a few countries. The history of Miguel Vargas begins far from Europe with his birth in 1975 in Venezuela, son of a university professor and of a psychologist. The family moves to Germany and the career of his father takes him all over the world, spending periods in Mexico and Spain. He debuts like a prodigy child at the early age of six and at the age of twelve he begins to teach. Since the very beginning he instinctively understands the spirit and character of Flamenco. After learning the basics of the dance, he develops his own personal style. "His dance is pure charisma, pure energy, passion, intensity, personality, technique. pure instinct." Artist of universal soul, personifies a fusion of cultures, music and styles of dance. Miguel Vargas has incorporated his modern cosmopolitan character into the pure flamenco dance. After obtaining a high school degree in 1994, Miguel Vargas begins his career in Spain, dancing in the most renowned tablao of Seville: Los Gallos. He performs with artists like Manuela Carrasco and Mario Maya. Along with Mario Maya's company, he performed in front of the King and Queen of Spain in the World Championships of Winter Sports in Granada in 1996. He performs in "Lincoln Center" of New York, in the Festival of Theater in Avignon and continues with a tour through France. In 1997 he creates his own company. He dances in Madrid, New York, in the Halle aux grains of Toulouse and realizes a tour through Florida. 1998 he takes part in the "Bienal de Flamenco of Seville", the most prestigious festival of flamenco in the world. At the moment, he continues presenting his shows in Singapore, Japan, Finland, Norway, Switzerland, Austria, Greece, Dubai, etc. He has been recorded in CD's and television, collaborating with Kiko Veneno and Esperanza Fernández among others. "Miguel Vargas is synonymous of dreams, dedication, efforts and victories" Today, he is one of the biggest exponents of the current flamenco dance. As ambassador of the Spanish culture he has danced in front of monarchs and presidents in the whole world. He is currently a businessman. He directs the Center of Art and Flamenco of Seville - institution dedicated to the education and diffusion of the flamenco art, together with his wife, the singer Esperanza Fernández.
"Flamenco is the way I express myself, my philosophy of life, not just my work. When I'm dancing, I reveal my soul. I am Flamenco from the time I get up in the morning until I go to sleep at night, even when I'm asleep. I dream flamenco. Flamenco is my wife, my children are flamenco, flamenco is the city where I live and everything I do," explains Miguel Vargas.

Several organizations with the support of the embassies of Spain and Greece, proudly present "The Bridging of Two Cultures: Andalucía-Crete," a concert event of music and dance. This is a unique and exceptional intercultural cooperation of musicians and dancers from Andalucía (Spain) and Crete (Greece). These two musical traditions, although from opposite ends of the Mediterranean, are inextricably linked through dance and the improvisations of each individual musician. Together they yield an exciting and refreshing insight into the two different yet similar cultures. The common and strongly felt passion in music and dance of these cultures will be show-cased, for the first time, on the stage of the Historic Lincoln Theatre, by a group of renowned musicians and dancers from both the Greek island of Crete and the Andalusia region of Spain. Even if you know nothing about Andalusian Flamenco and Cretan line dancing, this is a unique opportunity not to be missed!

Flamenco singer Esperanza Fernández and PostClassical Ensemble in El Amor Brujo/The Soldier's Tale at Georgetown University Gonda Theater
From the press release:
A new production of Falla's demonic flamenco masterpiece starring the legendary flamenco cantaora ESPERANZA FERNANDEZ in her DC debut.
El Amor Brujo originated as a 35-minute gypsy entertainment supported by a small pit orchestra. Today, we know this work only through its popular orchestral suite, including the torrid Ritual Fire Dance. PostClassical Ensemble's new production restores to Amor Brujo its narrative, dance, and flamenco song components.

ESPERANZA FERNÁNDEZ
Esperanza Fernández constitutes an unparalleled example of the most ambitious creativity and, in highlighting some of the most ambitious flamenco creativity, and in highlighting some of the artists with the great influence on the expansive direction of flamenco, she doubtlessly occupies a privileged place beside other great artists such as Enrique Morente, Carmen Linares and Mayte Martín. After an increasingly successful career spanning more than ten years, Esperanza Fernández, from Triana, continues to attract the attention of a great many enthusiasts.
She blossomed professionally as one of the artists in Mario Maya's show, "Amargo," which was based on spectacular choreography and the poems of Federico García Lorca. Spurred on exclusively by her restless artistic personality, form that moment on Esperanza took on the most varied projects. She participated in Manuel de Falla's "El amor brujo", which has been staged with many different orchestras and has even been recorded.
Afterwards, performers of such talent as violinist Yehudi Menuhin and singers Miriam Makeba (from South Africa) and Noa from Israel), on different occasions, made it possible for her electrifying voice to reach an audience that by no means listens exclusively to flamenco., For anyone—and we must add her contributions to records such as "Potro de rabia y miel" by Camaron de la Isla, "Los gitanos cantan a Lorca", "Cruce de caminos" y "Oratorrio por Ceferino" - it is no secret that there is hardly any musical committment that the cantaora has not undertaken at some time through her recordings and her well-attended tours.
Esperanza Fernández' career presents, at this stage, a landscape sparkling with classicism (she reencountered Falla in "El duente, la molinera y el corregidor" and in "Siete canciones espanolas"), of adventure in sound together with the French jazz musician Jean Marc Padovani, and of cultural blending with the Moroccan community, with whom she created the "Almadia" show.
She has been the guest star of the Spanish National Ballet in "El Cafe de Chinita" show; at the Seville FLamenco Art Biennial show she presented "Cuatro guitarras y una voz" and she is preparing, among others, the "Zahori" show with bailaor Miguel Vargas.
In 2008 Esperanza presented "Recuerdos" in several Spanish cities, collaborated again with the Spanish National Ballet (Teatro Real in Madrid, Music and Dance Festival in Las Palmas, Torino, Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville), and also performing her flamenco concerts in Spain and abroad: Banlieus Festival in Paris, Spring Festical in El Cairo, Theatre of Mexico City D.F., Festival Tanger sin Fronteras, Naples, Vienna, and Tampere to name a few places where she performed.
In 2009 the Flamenco Biennial in Seville granted her the prize El Giraldillo. She has also been awarded with the Prize Al Andalus.
