ABOUT THE ARTIST

Nélida Tirado began her formal dance training at the age of six at Ballet Hispánico de Nueva York, where she trained in classical ballet, Graham technique, classical Spanish dance and flamenco.  In her early teens, Ms. Tirado was invited to join “José Molina Bailes Españoles” Dance Company and toured the United States as a company member for several years. She subsequently joined the “Carlota Santana Spanish Dance Company” (aka “Flamenco Vivo”), where she worked as a soloist and dance captain.

In 1997, Ms. Tirado received an “Artist in Residence” grant from the New York Foundation of the Arts.  She subsequently moved to Spain, where she continued her studies and began to work professionally.  Having turned down a scholarship from the “Fundación Cristina Heeren” in Seville, Ms. Tirado joined “Compañía María Pages” as a soloist and dance captain, performing with the company at the Bienal del Arte Flamenco in Seville and other prestigious flamenco festivals in Spain and other countries.  Ms. Tirado has had several television appearances in Spain and in the United States.  Throughout her career, Ms. Tirado had the opportunity to work with many of Spain’s revered flamenco artists, such as:  Antonio “El Pipa”, Juan Andrés Maya, Manolo Marín, Manuel Soler, Antonio Reyes, Juan Manuel Cañizares, Antonio Malena, “La Tobala”, and Marina Heredia.

Upon her return to the United States, Ms. Tirado has worked with Edwin Aparicio, “Noche Flamenca” and was a featured flamenco star in the internationally acclaimed production Riverdance on Broadway.  In addition, she received outstanding reviews on her appearances at the Joyce Theater, Jacobs Pillow, and Lincoln Center.

Most recently, Ms. Tirado received raving reviews for her performance in Edwin Aparicio’s Entresueño in Washington DC, New York City, and Chicago.
