Tamara's dance class in Baltimore April 25, 2004

After fighting heavy traffic on the Beltway and I-95 (due to the women's rights march), Juan Delgado and I arrived at the Experimental Movement Concepts studio in Baltimore a few minutes late. Guitarist Jason Marcinski was already playing.

Feria de Sevilla en Philadelphia April 24, 2004

To my knowledge, this is the very first Feria de Sevilla for Philadelphia. Based on the size of the crowds, this is sure to become an annual event.

Philadelphia is about two and half hours away, so I prepared myself with Yahoo directions and a freshly-made paella Valenciana courtesy of the Andalucia Restaurant in Rockville. (thank you Maria!) April 24, 2004 5:02pm

Just crossing over from Delaware to Pennsylvania. We're just half an hour away from downtown Philadelphia! April 24, 2004 6:27pm

My friend, fellow guitarist and personal chauffer, Steve Svoboda. :) April 24, 2004 6:54pm

Yours truly "fueling up" on Red Bull--it's an energy drink, in case you don't know. :) April 24, 2004 6:55pm

After fighting downtown Philly traffic for a half-hour, we finally arrive at the International House, where the Philadelphia Feria de Sevilla took place. This is one of the several casetas. Of course, I didn't waste anytime in getting started. I just walked in pulled out my guitar and joined guitarists Pat D'Aprile and Shirley Martin accompanying the crowd as they danced non-stop Sevillanas. April 24, 2004 7:28pm

Just inside the International House. We arrived too late to purchase tickets. They were sold out. April 24, 2004 7:30pm

Nice idea, but it didn't seem to attract too many customers. April 24, 2004 7:32pm

Dancer Mariah del Chico performing with the Philadelphia-based Flamenco del Encuentro. (I actually met Mariah and many other Philly flamencos at a juerga in 2002.) April 24, 2004 7:56pm

Thanks to my little bit of fame through my website, people recognize me here. So I was able to get in the theater without a ticket. If you think about it, I really am a member of the press anyway. I walked in halfway during the show, so I only got a few pics.

The Flamenco Connection family. I couldn't help myself--I bought a flamenco CD, DVD and more. April 24, 2004 9:11pm

This was probably the most popular caseta--it had just the right ambience with the cool outdoor breeze and warm lights and energy of an enthusiastic crowd. I'd publish the pics to show you, but I won't--use your imagination instead.

I was very disappointed by the very low attendance by DC flamencos at the Philly Feria. You see...one of my motives behind putting together this website and this photo diary (capturing all these flamenco events on film is a lot of fun by the way, but it's still a lot of work) was for my website visitors to be inspired, enticed or whatever to come out to local flamenco events to support local flamencos. It is working so far, but stil, attendance at local events could be better. April 24, 2004 9:19pm

New York-based guitarist Carlos Revollar with Miguelito. I first met Carlos at Fazil's in New York about 7 or 8 years ago. He's one of the most humble artists I know. April 24, 2004 10:04pm

The crowd enjoying the fiesta at the Raíces caseta. You may recognize Ken McNaugton in the front center--he frequently attends DC area flamenco events. Standing next to him in the shirt with polka dots is New York-based percussionist Peter Basil who frequently works with several flamenco dance companies. April 24, 2004 10:23pm

Feria is over officially at 11:00pm but Steve and I continue the party with our new friends Ai and Mary. April 24, 2004 11:05pm

Philly-based guitarist John Gaspari stopped by to say goodbye, but I persuaded him to stick around to serenade the ladies. :) April 24, 2004 11:25pm

April 24, 2004 11:26pm

Fast forward ten hours later, it's Sunday morning in New Jersey. Despite a late night, I got up early filled with inspiration and eager to play my guitar. April 25, 2004 9:19am

Spanish Dance Theatre fund raiser at La Tasca DC April 23, 2004

The fund raiser was sold out--thank you to Euronet and friends of the Spanish Dance Theatre for your support. Being one of the performers myself, I couldn't take too many pics, so you'll have to settle for self-portraits from the rehearsal.
