Karavan Gypsy Music featuring Toto, Tito and Alex at Las Tapas. October 10, 2008 10:34pm
It's 11:40am on Sunday as I type these words. These pics are actually from more than a week ago, so I'm gradually catching up on my blog. Been busy, you know how it is. :-)
For one thing, I haven't been able to come out to Las Tapas on the weekends since I'm almost always performing on Fridays at Cabanas or otherwise just catching up with friends. But this time around when I finally got a night off, instead of staying at home and catching up on sleep like I really should, I went out to Las Tapas to checkout the new band, Karavan Gypsy Music.

The band consists of lead guitarist Tito, singer/guitarist Toto and percussionist Alex. There have been various groups that have played here at Tapas on the weekends, including Gibraltar, whom I blogged about in November last year, and of course most notably Duende Camarón who played here from 2000-2007, but things have settled down again for now and Karavan Gypsy Music is pretty much the permanent house band on the weekends.

As you might expect for a Spanish tapas bar, the repertoire is mostly Gipsy Kings. It's what the crowd expects. But I was very pleasantly surprised to hear some songs I had never heard played "rumba-style" including Chick Corea's "Spain," Ricky Martin's "Livin' la Vida Loca" and Tarkan's "Şımarık" aka "Kiss Kiss." They even did the Eagles' "Hotel California."

From when I used to be a regular visitor at Tapas on the weekends, I saw a few familiar faces in the crowd. It was kind of like old times. Definitely a place to go to hear mostly Gipsy Kings, dance and make new friends.
