Mateo Romero, Isabelita, Hector Márquez and Ginette at Cabanas. May 16, 2008 8:30pm

It's 4:00am on Monday as I type these words. It's been a busy weekend which you'll see documented photographically over the next couple of days as I catch up on my blog.

Friday night I performed at Cabanas as usual. The dancers were Isabelita Otero and Ginette. Plus we had the special treat of having Mateo Romero on cajón and cante by Hector Márquez. Overall, it was a very energetic show.

As much as I enjoy having a full group, it does, by comparison, make the nights when we only have guitar and baile seem a slightly less inspiring. Don't get me wrong, we still put on a good show no matter what. It's just that having cante takes the whole show to the next level.

Technically, Ginette's birthday was this past Wednesday, but I organized the party in her honor for Friday: a more suitable night for getting friends to come out and celebrate. After the show, we took over the corner of the lounge near the fireplace and got the party started.

I had a busy week and unfortunately, one crucial thing did slip my mind: ordering a birthday cake ahead of time. So three hours before the party, I found a place called Baked and Wired just a block away from Cabanas that makes some mouth-wateringly delicious gourmet cupcakes. And instead of a single large cake, I bought ten lemon icing cupcakes with raspberry filling and on top of each of them I placed two candles.
