It's 10am on Friday as I type these words. I'm on a weird sleep schedule again, but I think I'll go out for a walk and enjoy the beautiful weather before coming back and spending the afternoon taking a nap.

Anywayz, here are some pics from Tuesday night at Las Tapas. The dancers were Emily Mazzotti and Pam de Ocampo. We had the pleasure of having some inspiring cante by Hector Márquez. Plus we had in the audience two other young singers: "Naíto" and Marylin Márquez. Enjoy!

As for tonight (Friday), I'll be performing at Cabanas with dancers Ginette Perea and Isabelita. With the warm beautiful weather, the Georgetown waterfront is the place to be! See you there!

P.S. This weekend be sure to checkout free performances by Arte Flamenco 6pm Saturday at the Washington Folk Festival and by Ziva's Institute of Spanish Dance 6:15pm this Sunday, also at the Washington Folk Festival. Details on my flamenco events page.

Yours truly will be going to see Estela Velez's Furia Flamenca at the Awaken The Dancer Within" Extravaganza in Fairfax on Sunday. Have a great weekend!

Jovenes Flamencos go to New Jersey. May 23, 2008

Hector Márquez, "Naíto," Mateo Romero and Ginette Perea arrive at the venue in New Jersey after a long four-hour drive. May 23, 2008 (photo by Marylin Márquez)

It's 1-something in the morning on Thursday as I type these words. My friend Marylin Márquez gave me permission to republish pics from her Facebook album of a flamenco concert she photographed in New Jersey. The performance was setup by her brother Hector who writes:

"We went to Pateron, New Jersey for a gig. It was very difficult with the four-hour drive and a bit of traffic but we managed to get there early to have a run-through of the show and have a sound check. The locals treated us very well. With an inspired band we put on an amazing show. Our band Pata Negra was sooo tired of the drive that we got there with no duende at all but just minutes before the opening guitar solo we all felt the duende coming back. It was a very upbeat and moving concert to the point where I even got up to dance a "patada" of bulerías! After the show there were many people who wanted to take pictures with us and thank us for coming. The photographer was Marylin Márquez."

I'm half-jokingly calling them los jovenes flamencos (which translates as "the young flamencos). Don't take my labeling of them too seriously. It just so happens that all of them are in their early 20's. They're the product of a new generation of flamencos who have access to all kinds of learning materials in the form of CD's, DVD's, books, videos on YouTube, online discussion forums, workshops from local and international flamencos etc.

Don't get me wrong. Having these educational sources readily available doesn't magically transform you into an expert in flamenco. You still have to put in the years studying, practicing and getting the experience onstage. As for the artists pictured in this blog entry: I've been working with Ginette in DC area tablaos since January 2004. Hector and Mateo have been joining me in my shows at Cafe Citron, Las Tapas, Cabanas and Tapeo during the past year or so.

"Naíto" and Hector in alegrías. May 23, 2008 (photo by Marylin Márquez)

As local younger singers such as José Oretea, Carton Ashton and now Hector Márquez and "Naíto" learn more and more on-the-job how to work with dancers, we can expect to have a larger pool of singers to call upon for flamenco performances in the years to come. This is pretty exciting for me as a performing flamenco guitarist because for years, we here in DC have become so accustomed to doing shows in tablaos most of the time (about 90%) without singers!

I've been working in the DC flamenco scene for almost 17 years which is long enough for me to see several waves of students become experienced performers (a few of which also become teachers). In fact, one of the new young dancers I'm working with now is the daughter of one of the dancers I used to work with more than 10 years ago!

Flamenco is an art form where you can never stop learning so I'll be studying, practicing and playing the guitar for many years to come. In the meantime, I'm looking forward to seeing what the newer generation has to offer. Any thoughts on what to expect?

Arte Flamenco 8th annual recital, part one. May 17, 2008

Henry Jova and Jesús Serrano rehearsing in the dressing room. May 17, 2008 6:10pm

It's 1-something in the afternoon on Monday as I type these words. Got up a short while ago after going to bed at 6am this morning. Back in front of the computer and cranking out another blog from this busy flamenco-filled weekend.

This time I have the first batch of pics from the Arte Flamenco recital which was held at Slayton House in Columbia, Maryland on Saturday night. I took over 600 pics, so I'm going to have spread out a selection of them over several blog entries.

Some of the dance students I met backstage were surprised that I came to see their recital instead of going to Edwin Aparicio's concert in Baltimore which was going on the same night. As much as I would have loved to go see that professional level concert, believe it or not, student recitals are exciting for me too. Why?

Some of the dancers in Edwin's show were students of Arte Flamenco at one time e.g. Jason Vera y Aragón, Pam de Ocampo and Dana Shoenberg. And over the years, Natalia Monteleón, Arte Flamenco's director and teacher, has produced more performance level dancers than any other teacher in the DC area. (What I mean by performance level is that they have enough understanding of guitar and cante that they can perform a dance confidently with live musicians with little or no rehearsal.)

So for me, it's exciting to see these wonderful future performers in the beginning stages and, assuming they stick with it, watch them grow artistically over the years. It's also fun to make predictions about which ones I think will become next star performers...but enough said, I'll keep that to myself. :-)

Enjoy the pics!

Flamenco Friday at Cabanas and Ginette's birthday. May 16, 2008

Mateo Romero, Isabelita, Hector Márquez and Ginette Perea at Cabanas. May 16, 2008 8:30pm

It's 4:00am on Monday as I type these words. It's been a busy weekend which you'll see documented photographically over the next couple of days as I catch up on my blog.

Friday night I performed at Cabanas as usual. The dancers were Isabelita Otero and Ginette Perea. Plus we had the special treat of having Mateo Romero on cajón and cante by Hector Márquez. Overall, it was a very energetic show.

As much as I enjoy having a full group, it does, by comparison, make the nights when we only have guitar and baile seem a slightly less inspiring. Don't get me wrong, we still put on a good show no matter what. It's just that having cante takes the whole show to the next level.

My thanks to Daniela Maldonado for taking pictures during the performance. Enjoy!

Technically, Ginette's birthday was this past Wednesday, but I organized the party in her honor for Friday: a more suitable night for getting friends to come out and celebrate. After the show, we took over the corner of the lounge near the fireplace and got the party started.

The birthday girl: Ginette! May 16, 2008 10:47pm

I had a busy week and unfortunately, one crucial thing did slip my mind: ordering a birthday cake ahead of time. So three hours before the party, I found a place called Baked and Wired just a block away from Cabanas that makes some mouth-wateringly delicious gourmet cupcakes. And instead of a single large cake, I bought ten lemon icing cupcakes with raspberry filling and on top of each of them I placed two candles.

Last flamenco show at Tapeo. May 3, 2008

Miguelito and Emily Mazzotti at Tapeo. May 3, 2008 7:59pm (photo by Chris Mazzotti)

It's about 3:00am on Monday as I type these words. Yeah, it's true. This past Saturday was the last flamenco show at Tapeo which coincidentally was the two year anniversary of our show there. I first performed at Tapeo on May 3, 2006 with dancers Ginette Perea and María.

The reason for canceling the show is that starting next week Tapeo the restaurant is changing its menu to American cuisine and its name to something new. So unfortunately Tapeo is also gone along with the flamenco. Nothing personal—just the way it goes in the restaurant biz.

The least I could've wished for my last night performing here was beautiful warm weather, so we could perform outside—the shows in the patio are so much more enjoyable for us performers and the audience alike. According to my iPhone-toting friends, the temperature was 74F and despite the clouds, there was no rain.

The dancer for the evening was Emily Mazzotti. Despite it being our last time to present flamenco here, we were still very inspired. And why not? We were outdoors performing underneath the stars. And of course it helped tremendously that we had quite a few of our loyal fans in the audience cheering us on. Not to mention the many children that enjoyed our show and even participated!

When I introduced myself and Emily to our audience, I also took a moment to acknowledge our friends and supporters. Although normally it's not really cool to promote my other gigs at other competing restaurants and clubs, being that it was our last time here, I decided to go ahead and do it anyway for the sake of our fans who might want to follow us elsewhere.

Don't worry. I'm not get all mushy about our last show. :-) Just enjoy these final pics of Tapeo one last time and wish me luck as I go about my search for a new Saturday night gig.

Flamenco at Las Tapas. April 29, 2008

Kiyo, Kyoko and Miguelito at Las Tapas. April 29, 2008 8:43pm (photo by Edwin Aparicio)

It's almost 4:00am on Thursday as I type these words. So this past Tuesday, I had the pleasure of meeting for the first time Kiyo, a cajón player based in Miami who has worked extensively with Kyoko. Of course, I already knew about him from seeing his pics in Kyoko's website. And he knew a lot about me being a regular reader of my flamenco blog.

Anywayz, the good news is that Kyoko and Kiyo are moving to the DC area (and as an added bonus Kiyo is not only a percussionist but also a flamenco guitarist). Welcome to the DC flamenco community to you both!

Speaking of Miami-based artists, let's not forget singer/guitarist Luís Linares "El Tiburón" who I met last week at Cafe Citron and who has also worked extensively with Kyoko. It would be cool if he moved here to DC too! We'll see. :-)

Speaking of which, it seems that we're getting a regular influx of flamenco artists to the nation's capital each year. Here are a few names that come to mind:

2005: Marsha Savchenko aka Rosa la Huracana, originally from Orlando, Florida—currently dividing her time between performing and teaching ballroom and flamenco in Old Town Alexandria.

2006: Genevieve Guinn "La Genoveva", originally from Austin, Texas—a very much in-demand flamenco instructor at DC Dance Collective.

2007: Flor Pérez Taboada, originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina—still settling in but already developing a small very loyal following at DC Dance Collective and Rendezvous studio.

2008: Kyoko and Kiyo—we'll see what the future holds!

In other news, Edwin Aparicio informs me that he has a show coming up next month at the Creative Alliance in Baltimore. Also, Furia Flamenca will be performing at the Embassy of Spain at 1:00pm this Saturday May 3, 2008 as part of the second annual European Union Open House.

Finally, for those of you who spend a lot of time watching flamenco vids on YouTube, you'll love this tip that I just heard about last night...

To view the HD version of the video you are watching, paste this special code to the end of the URL
&fmt=18

For example, if the original URL is
http://youtube.com/watch?v=bUtQQQPwRNc

To view the HD version, add the special code at the end so it would look like this
http://youtube.com/watch?v=bUtQQQPwRNc&fmt=18

Press the enter key and see what happens. It really works!

Try it out on one of Edwin's videos. When you add the special code, you'll notice that the sound is much crisper and the picture is sharp.

Flamenco Friday at Cabanas. April 25, 2008

A few minutes after sunset on a warm Friday night, there's plenty of people partying on the Georgetown waterfront. April 25, 2008 8:06pm

It's 2:00am on Thursday as I type these words. Been a busy week, so I'm just getting around to publishing some pics from Friday. Oh well—better late then never.

Mother Nature was nice to us, yet again, on a Friday night. It was sunny for awhile, but although the clouds filled the sky later in the evening, it stayed warm which meant that the crowds stayed at the Georgetown Waterfront longer. Of course, with the restaurant crowded, I had to wait a little longer to put away my sound system—it's quite difficult lugging a hundred pounds of sound equipment through a dining room packed with customers.

To pass the time, us artists and our friends chilled out in the seating area adjacent to the bar and started a jam session...
