Retrospective: Hispanic Heritage Parade in Woodley Park October 1, 2000

Ena Camargo and Gigi Ortega helping a young dancer accessorize. October 1, 2000 12:15pm
It's about 1:00am on Monday as I type these words. I'm pretty psyched about my being able to recover these old photo files from a hard disk that crashed last year. As far as I know, I have the most extensive collection of photos and articles about the DC flamenco scene. These photo archives mean a lot to me and I want to share them with you.
So this is my first retrospective blog entry. I'll do these from time to time especially during slow periods like now since most of the local tablao gigs are canceled during holiday periods like Christmas.
These pics were taken in October 2000. Those of you who have been involved in the flamenco scene for many years will probably recognize some of these young dancers. Or maybe you won't. Some people change a lot in 7 years. Some change very little or not at all. Take a look for yourself and decide. Enjoy!

Ena Camargo created a flamenco and Spanish dance school that was based in Rockville, Maryland. She passed away in 2002.

Grecia Anchorena. October 1, 2000 1:58pm
I met Grecia when she was 3 years old. One night in 1997, I was performing at Rincón Español with dancer Micaela Moreno. During the show we heard some pretty decent palmas which took us by surprise--your average audience member can barely keep the beat without rushing. We looked around and there was this cute little girl sitting on the stairs near the stage. So we invited her to sit on stage with us just for fun. Since she was the daughter of one of the servers, she was there every week so little Grecia joined us onstage all the time. Didn't have to explain the compás to her. She just followed her instincts! Over the years, she became like a daughter to us. Occasionally I assumed the role of babsitter. I took her to Kennedy Center one year to a performance by Paco de Lucía and she slept through most of the show until dancer Joaquín Grilo took the stage!
Grecia just turned 14 this year. And although she's not actively studying flamenco, she does have an appreciation for it.
Anywayz, I hope you enjoyed this little blast from the past. There'll be more. Stay tuned!

Hi Miguelito! and Happy New Year. I try to keep up with your blog, even from here in snowy cold Buffalo, NY. Hoping all is well.
