Sala Rociera at the Pink Flamenco July 1, 2006

It's 1:21am on Monday as I type these words. Attendance wasn't quite up to the usual number (I imagine due to competing parties commemorating the holiday weekend), but was still pretty decent. We all came from near and far for our flamenco fix.
As for myself, I arrived shortly after 11:00pm coming straight from my gig at Tapeo (see previous blog entry). Spent a bit of time socializing and making a few new friends and greeting old ones while the Sevillanas tracks on the sound system played on and on at first while the guests danced. Later it became just background music. That's when I knew it was time to setup the sound system and start the live music portion of the evening.
For those of you who don't already know, the Sala Rociera is what we call our monthly flamenco party here in the Washington DC area. It's where student dancers and guitarists gather to enjoy each other's company and support each other as we try out the repertoire that we're learning (or have already learned ) in our respective classes. A number of guitarists, including yours truly provide the live accompaniment while a few others even give a shot at singing a letra or two.
Most of all, we're just friends having fun with flamenco and getting some important performing experience in a low pressure atmosphere.

There were a number of new faces. One that stood out in particular was this guitarist named John "Catalano," who travelled all the way from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to attend our flamenco party. Welcome John! He opened with a few guitar solos.

Singer José Oretea (from the rumba group Duende Camarón) usually arrives pretty late since he too gigs most nights. When he walks in at around 3-something am, the party picks up its last wind.

As the party came to a close, the last of us lingered outside for a smoke or some light conversation before finally calling it a night.

I was at the Pink Flamenco's party last Saturday. I was there with a couple of friends, we couldn't stay more than the midnight, but we had so much fun, I am a flamenco student at Natalia Monteleon, and at this party I had the oportunity to practice my sevillanas. This reunions are great idea, and I would like to congratulate to the persons who organize
